This campground is the only campground located within Mesa Verde National Park in Colorado. The campground is quite large, and located within the first five miles of the park entrance. Located at the top of the mesa giving the park it's name, the park is about 45 minutes from the attraction of the park, the cliff dwellings. The campground has several loops. Loops are adjacent to each other and have an incline as you work your way through the loop, offering more views at the top. Loop and campground roads are paved, while site pads are dirt. A few of the campsites offer hookups, and all sites offer picnic tables, fire rings and some shrubbery. We found the campground to be in need of some TLC and were disappointed with how overgrown the grasses and shrubbery appeared. The natural grasses at our site were so overgrown, it forced us to explore no further than the site pad and picnic table. Site pads are fairly unlevel,
and we felt pretty fortunate that our site was an anomaly. The campground has large Laundromat, gas station, a nicely stocked store offering groceries, souvenirs and information about the park. Check in for us was a bit of a lengthy process and we found the on-duty supervisor who was assigning us our site to be rude. Evening ranger programs are available. We enjoyed spotting deer at our camp and the park's attractions area must-see if you are in the area. It is definitely worth stopping here for a few nights to explore the park. A few RV parks are available outside of the park if you prefer a more polished setting.
