Atlatl Rock Campground, Valley of Fire State Park, Overton, Nevada

Atlatl Campground, named for the impressive rock formation adjacent to the entrance of the campground, is the preferred, larger campground for RVers visiting Valley of Fire State Park, an hour northeast of Las Vegas and 5 miles west of Lake Mead. With over forty campsites available, several sites in the park are designated as RV only sites, offering water and 50 amp hookups. Sites here are spectacular; all offering amazing views of red sandstone formations that draw hikers, campers and visitors to Valley of Fire, and give it its name. We were impressed by the condition of this park, as sites and interior roads were nicely maintained and graveled, and individual sites offer BBQs, fire pits, shaded and cemented picnic table pads and of course, hookups in the RV sites. Most sites in this campground, especially the sites designated for RVs only
were long or wide enough to park a second rig at and offered a dual water and electric hookups at each of these sites--a real perk if the park is full and you are traveling with another family. The park itself offers many hikes, vistas and geological treasures that you can easily get to from camp with a dinghy vehicle or your rig. RV parking is available throughout the park at the various sights. All campsites within the park, including those here at Atlatl Rock Campground, are first come first serve. Sites fill up by early afternoon most weekends and holidays in spring, winter, and fall. In fact, we have attempted to come here four separate times, and only gottena site two of those. This park is pretty isolated and a bit of a trek to get to, so we've crossed this one off our destination list. Summer temperatures exceed 100 degrees and winter temperatures are quite brisk and often dip to freezing, so Spring and Fall are the best times to visit. Plan on arriving early in the day to snag a spot and bring all of your necessary supplies, as there are no concessions within the park or adjacent to the park.
