Whispering Elms Motel & RV Park, Baker, Nevada

After driving many, many hours and miles and arriving at Great Basin National Park in Baker, Nevada, we were unable to secure a first come, first served spot at one of the many campgrounds within the park's boundaries. The only alternate choice within an hour's drive is Whispering Elms RV Park, right in the town of Baker, and only about 10 minutes from the park. This is one of the most unique places we have stayed. Not sure if it was the trailer home bar with the Budweiser sign sticking out of the roof that also served as the RV park check-in (under 21 not admitted, leave them in the RV), or the tee-pee where a woman was reading palms and smoking the peace pipe with "locals," but this
place was interesting. This property has a myriad of accommodations: RV sites, the tee pee or a motel room that eerily resembles The Bates Motel. With no other options, we knocked on the door of a home on the property, mistakenly assuming that this was the residence of the "host." It was at this point that we were directed to the portable building with the Budweiser sign atop, where the owner works and where check-in takes place. After securing a spot for the night, we pulled into a site of our choice, definitely amongst "whispering elms" but that faintly gave me a worrisome feeling of the Nightmare on Elm Street series.  Sites here are gravel, offer full hookups, new picnic tables and are set between the strip of motel rooms to the North, a junkyard to the east, the bar/check in to the south and the tee pee and residence to the West. Not many scenic views here. A few other rigs looked as if they had the same poor luck as we did: no site availability within the National Park. Although our stay was surprisingly uneventful and quiet despite the potential risks of sleeping outside of a windowless bar, I do not consider this a viable option unless you absolutely cannot make it another hours drive to the much nicer KOA located in Ely, Nevada.
