San Mateo Campground, San Onofre State Beach, San Clemente, California

Coastal, but not beachfront like it's San Onofre State Beach twin at the bluffs, this campground is situated adjacent to Camp Pendleton in San Clemente, California. The valley in which is lies can be lush and green after seasonal rains, and provides a pretty backdrop to the camp. San Mateo Creek is located just east of the campground, providing a riparian setting for the 150+ campsites. You really can't go wrong selecting a site here as sites are clean, spacious, grassy (following rains), fairly private, and provide paved pads with a fire pit and picnic table. Campsites 1-67 provide water and electric hookups; a bonus during cooler months. Hot showers, a dump station and several camp hosts are
also available. There is a nice hiking trail to the beach, and although it is marked as 1.5 miles, it seemed much longer to us. Nearby in the beach community of San Clemente you can find shopping, restaurants and beaches.
